At the same time, the International Genomics Research Center of Jiangsu University was officially inaugurated.
Sir Richard John Roberts is an outstanding scientist in the field of international life sciences, mainly engaged in the study of eukaryotic gene structure and mRNA shearing mechanism. Because of the "unique discovery of broken genes", Sir Roberts and American scientist Sharp won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Xu Wen, Deputy Mayor of Zhenjiang City, met with Sir Roberts and his party. President Yan Xiaohong, Vice President Ding Jianning, Director Chen Guoyin of the International Genomics Research Center of our school, and heads of the Department of Personnel, School of Pharmacy, and International Department attended the meeting. During the meeting, Xu Wen extended a warm welcome to Sir Roberts. He briefly introduced Zhenjiang’s history, the development of Jiangsu University’s career, and future development plans. He pointed out that the Zhenjiang Municipal Government is currently working with Jiangsu University to build the school into a high-level university with influential domestic and international status. The joining of Sir Roberts will further promote the school's career to achieve new brilliance and get more exciting! At the same time, the municipal government will pay more attention to the development of Jiangsu University and the International Genomics Research Center. Sir Roberts expressed that he would advance cooperation with our school in genetics research as much as possible and hoped that the school would give more support to young teachers in related research. Later, Yan Xiaohong and Sir Roberts had a meeting, and the two parties had exchanges and consultations on regular visits to the school for academic guidance, deepening and expanding research fields, scientific research guarantee conditions, and the introduction of scientific research talents.
In the afternoon of the 27th, the appointment ceremony and academic report of Richard John Roberts Honorary Professor were held in the school's small auditorium. President Yan Xiaohong, Vice President Zhao Yutao, Director Chen Guoyin of the International Genomics Research Center of our school, and heads of related functional departments such as the Personnel Department and International Department, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Environmental Safety, School of Food, School of Overseas Education, School of Biological Sciences, Representatives of teachers and students from the affiliated hospital attended the ceremony. At the ceremony, Yan Xiaohong awarded Sir Roberts a letter of appointment and wore a school badge. Yan Xiaohong said that at present, the school is in a critical period of solidly advancing the construction of a high-level and distinctive international research university. Sir Roberts’ appointment as an honorary professor of our school is of great significance to the development of the school’s biomedical sector. I hope that the school’s relevant disciplines and research teams Able to continuously improve academic strength and research level under the guidance of Sir Roberts. Later, Sir Roberts made a special academic report entitled "The Path to the Nobel Prize" and "Food is Medicine for 800 million people" for the teachers and students. He started from his childhood experience and reviewed his experience at the University of Sheffield. His study history described the importance of interest and reading and the important role of "contingency" in his research career on the road to the Nobel Prize. At the same time, he gave an in-depth explanation of issues related to genetic modification technology. In the interactive communication session, teachers and students of our school actively asked questions, and Sir Roberts answered one by one, inspiring the students, and the atmosphere was warm. On the 28th, the "Nobel Prize Winners Face to Face"-Jiangsu University Biomedicine Academic Salon was held in the second lecture hall of the University Conference Center. Vice President Wu Chundu presided over the meeting. At the meeting, Chen Guoyin, director of the International Genomics Research Center of our school, introduced the current status and future prospects of the center, and described the center's research focus and future research directions. Participants from the School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, Institute of Life Sciences and School of Environmental Safety of our school introduced the main research work of their respective schools and had a dialogue with Sir Roberts. Sir Roberts proposed to encourage teachers and students to use English to communicate more in English, encourage scientific research on bacteria, and scientific research in universities should not only pay attention to the number of papers published in journals with high impact factors, but also pay attention to the quality of research and conduct Suggestions for meaningful research and other aspects. In addition, Sir Roberts and his party also visited the International Genomics .Research Center of our school, related laboratories of the School of Pharmacy, and the school history museum, and communicated with young teachers and students.
During the visit of Sir Roberts and his entourage, the opening ceremony of the International Genomics Research Center of Jiangsu University was also held. Sir Richard John Roberts and Xu Wen, Deputy Mayor of Zhenjiang City, jointly unveiled the plaque for the center. Sir Roberts was appointed as the honorary consultant of the center, and the principal Yan Xiaohong issued a letter of appointment to Sir Roberts. The center is characterized by genomics, and currently has five laboratories including epigenetics, intestinal microbiology, common chronic diseases and tumor genetic etiology diagnosis, and cell culture. There are currently 5 full-time researchers including professors and associate professors, all of whom have doctoral degrees. They are led by Professor Chen Guoyin from the Malaysian Academy of Sciences and concurrently director of the research center. The center focuses on product development and scientific and technological innovation research in the fields of green ecology, human health, and organ aging. It mainly conducts research in the fields of detection of gene polymorphism and gene mutation, safety evaluation, screening of toxins, and gene regulation mechanisms of cell fate.
